Fender Jazzmaster

Fender  >  Fender Jazzmaster

Fender Telecaster | Fender Stratocaster | Fender Jazzmaster | Fender Jaguar | Fender Mustang

The Fender Jazzmaster was designed to be a cutting-edge, upscale guitar for Fender in the late 1950’s – a "gentleman’s Stratocaster,” if you will. Featuring a curvaceous offset-waist design and a tremolo system from outer space – the Jazzmaster drew lots of attention during its debut at the 1958 NAMM show.

The intended market for the Jazzmaster was the jazz crowd – Fender hoped to present a solid-body alternative to the hollow-bodied jazz boxes that were ruling the market at the time. While the Jazzmaster sounds fantastic for jazz – it quickly became popular with surf rock artists. This led to the creation of the Jaguar a few years later.

Jazzmasters feature a switchable rhythm circuit, which effectively enables the user to save tonal presets – making the Jazzmaster one of the most versatile guitars on the market at their launch. This feature is still a favorite of many guitarists today. Another interesting feature on the Jazzmasters is the floating tremolo system. This system has been put to very creative and interesting use by experimental bands such as My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. Early on, the Jazzmasters tremolo system was favored by surf artists due to its ability to perform clean dive bombs without going out of tune.

The single coil "soapbar” pickups in the original Jazzmasters are some of the most favored in the industry due to their warm, piano like tones. Often confused with the Gibson P90 pickup, the Jazzmaster pickup is typically not as hot or gritty, predominantly favoring tactful, dynamic playing styles to any other. This is not to say that rock bands don’t employ the Jazzmaster soapbar – J. Mascis of alt rock band Dinosaur Jr often uses heavily overdriven tube amps and distortion pedals with his Jazzmaster. Mascis is so closely tied to the Jazzmaster that he now has a signature model.

The general rule of thumb with these guitars is this – if you think you want one, you want one.
