Fender Mustang

Fender  >  Fender Mustang

Fender Telecaster | Fender Stratocaster | Fender Jazzmaster | Fender Jaguar | Fender Mustang

The Fender Mustang has its roots in both the 1950's Duo-Sonic and Musicmaster student models. In 1964, Fender drastically redesigned the line by introducing the Mustang. Featuring a smooth offset-waist design (inspired by the Jazzmaster) and a unique tremolo system (Dynamic Fender Vibrato) - the Mustang was essentially an upgraded Duo-Sonic.

The Mustang originally featured two neck options - a 21 fret, 22.5 inch (3/4) and a 22 fret, 24 inch version. Two angled, covered single-coil pickups were included in all versions of the Mustang. Each pickup had it's own 3-way slider switch. On the Mustangs, the pickups can be used individually, in series or out-of-phase when in parallel. This was incredible feature set for the time, especially on a student model.

In 1969, Fender released the "Competition Mustang," which featured a new batch of color options as well as a bold racing stripe along the forearm contour on the front of the body. Many of the Competition Mustangs also featured matching headstocks. The Mustang changed very little except for cosmetic variations up and to its discontinuation in 1982.

In the mid 80's, Mustangs (even all original models from the 60's) were relatively easy to come by secondhand, and the resale value was very little because they bore the stigma of being a student model. This allowed for many artists who didn't make much money to afford the guitars, picking up Mustangs in pawn shops and second-hand music stores and using them to create their music.

The Mustang was finally brought into the limelight in the early 1990's, with the rise of such bands as Sonic Youth and Nirvana. The demand for Mustangs skyrocketed right along with the popularity of Nirvana, as singer/guitar player Kurt Cobain was rarely seen on stage without one in his hands. Fender reissued the Competition Mustangs around this time period, and those were discontinued in 1998 to make way for a re-introduction of the 1965 Mustang.

Current Production:

The Classics Series 1965 Mustang Reissue is available in three finish configurations - Dakota Red or Daphne Blue with a 3-Ply White Pearloid Pickguard or Olympic White with a 4-Ply Tortoise Shell Pickguard. All finishes feature a Poplar Body and Rosewood fretboard, just like the originals. The styling is intensely period correct, including '65 Mustang Headstock and Bridge-plate logos, white-tipped vintage Gotoh tuning machines and a vintage appropriate gap between the control plate and pickguard. These guitars are of exceptional quality, crafted in the world-famous Dyna Gakki factory in Japan.
