Fender Stratocaster

The instantly recognizable Fender Stratocaster is a design originated by Leo Fender, Freddie Tavares and George Fullerton in 1954. It has been copied by nearly every other guitar manufacturer in existence and played by some of the world’s most famous players and on countless famous recordings. Arguably, the Fender Stratocaster (or "Strat,” as it is known colloquially) is the most widely known electric guitar known to man.

The Stratocaster features a sleek, contoured body shape with curves on the upper back and front bottom to make the guitar more comfortable to play. A bolt-on maple neck is typically used in conjunction with either a rosewood or maple fingerboard. The Stratocaster was the first of the Fender guitars to include rosewood as a fingerboard option.

Three single coil pickups are mounted to the scratch plate. Early Stratocasters had a 3 way selector switch – one position per pickup. Players found that they liked the way the guitar sounded when the pickup selector switch was in-between settings and found creative ways to lodge the switch in those "extra positions.” This practice became so common that Fender eventually adopted a 5-way switch for the Stratocasters and never looked back. The 5-way selector switch in conjunction with a reverse wound middle pickup provides a hum-cancelling effect when in positions 2 & 4 (the in-between positions). These two positions are still favored by many Strat players to this day.

The Stratocaster is known for a wide array of tonal combinations. This diverse electric guitar is great for lead and rhythm work – with a tone that cuts well through a live mix and a dependability that is second to none. The Stratocaster is a true workhorse.

List of famous Strat players:

Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Clapton, Billy Corgan, Dick Dale, Tom Delonge, David Gilmour, Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, Dave Murray, John Mayer, Mark Knopfler, Yngwie Malmsteen, Richie Sambora, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Kenny Wayne Shepherd – just to name a few. These artists all have their own signature Fender Stratocasters, but there are many more famous musicians who have favored Strats.

All in all, the Stratocaster has been the be-all, end-all guitar for many very talented musicians. There are countless options available these days, from finish to pickup configurations. No matter what style of music you play, there is certainly a Stratocaster that will help you get the job done right – and in style.
