Squier VM 77 Jazz
|
March, 2011 |
Reviewer: Marv
The Squier 77 jazz (VM series) is a black-on-black, Indonesian-made jazz that is as close as you can get to five stars. Mine was one of the first, and I bought it through the mail (new) for $285.
Setup was all right, but I reduced action and intonated the instrument; I also put on half-rounds. Of course, it came with roundwounds, and there was LOTS of nice fat low end with the rounds. I happen to like flats or half-rounds.
The neck was straight, tuners were good, bridge was a standard piece of tin. Workmanship was very good. Very nice black paint job with black pickguard. Vintage-style knobs.
Pickups. These are 'Duncan Designed,' which I guess means they might have come out of the Duncan factory, or at least off the Duncan drawing board. They are not bad individually, but used in tandem they are quite good.
I swapped the bridge out for a Gotoh 201 from Warmoth, and for $35 you CANNOT go wrong. It's a direct swap, and what an improvement. I also shimmed the neck to bring the action down just a bit more. (The Gotoh has fat barrels.) The neck shim was simple. There is a great neck shim tutorial on B*ssChat UK.
This guitar delivers a nice range of sounds, the best being a nicely punchy mix of the two pickups. For my money, the half-rounds give it a mellowness that doesn't compromise the jazz punch; but if you like rounds, you are going to love the sound you get, right out of the box.
Very nice balance for a heavy instrument; the neck is satin finish, and very smooth and fast. Very sharp instrument, and for the money? Forget it. Great buy.
