Headphones

Audio-Technica  >  Headphones

A common misconception about headphones is that they are all alike but some just sound better than others. That is not necessarily true. Headphones are generally used for two specific purposes. The first is to simply hear a sound or music with the objective being to obtain the highest sonic quality, clarity, and brilliance. The other is for recording and mixing purposes. In recording the objective is to hear exactly what you have recorded or have coming into the mixer and nothing more.

In recording you don't want extended bass or any other alteration of the sound. You want to hear exactly what the instrument or material sounds like unaltered. This is called being dynamically flat. If you record and monitor your mix with headphones that colorize the sound or enhance it in any way, then you are getting a false representation of what the sound really sounds like. In recording, you want to start with a dynamically flat signal and then use your mixer and effects to achieve the desired tonal characteristics. If the headphone is changing the sound, or adding bass, then you will be hearing something slightly different than what you are real recording. Be certain that if you are recording to chose headphones that are designed for and described as studio headphones, such as the Audio Technica ATHM40FS.

For music listening or DJ Headphones, you can chose either high quality studio headphones or headphones designed simply for playback. One other feature to consider when buying headphones is whether they are open back headphones, or closed back headphones. Closed back headphones isolate the listener from other outside sounds or noise. For example, someone recording a live band wants to hear just what is coming into the console, and does not want to hear what is coming out of the speakers. For this application a close back headphone would be the best choice, such as the Audio Technica ATHM30. When a musician is recording and wants to hear some of the ambient sound of the band around them, then an open back headphone would be chosen. Audio Technica also offers Headphones with built in talk back microphones such as the ATHCOM1 & ATHCOM2. These are great for DJ's who needs a hands free headset mic and headphones at the same time.
