Fender Jaguar

Fender  >  Fender Jaguar

Fender Telecaster | Fender Stratocaster | Fender Jazzmaster | Fender Jaguar | Fender Mustang

The Fender Jaguar was released in 1962 as a more elegant and complex version of the Jazzmaster. These sister guitars are aesthetically very similar – both sport the now classic offset waist body style and rosewood fretboards. A unique feature of the Jaguar is that it was issued with a 22 fret, 24 inch scale neck – the same neck that would go on to be used in the Mustang years later.

Functionally, the Jaguar is similar to the Jazzmaster in that they both share a unique "dual-circuit” design. However, the Jaguar is certainly a step further in terms of configurability.

The Jaguar features three control panels – one at the top wing, one on the side and the usual tone and volume control panel by the output jack. The top wing features a master switch, that when pressed upwards enables the volume and tone slider controls beneath it. This setting allows control over the neck pickup only.

When in the downward position, the master switch activates the right side control panel. This control panel contains 3 switches: on/off for neck pickup, on/off for bridge pickup and tone switch. The tone switch can be defined as a treble boost or bass cut – allowing the guitar to cut more easily through a live mix. The volume and tone controls located by the output jack are used when in this position. This multi-option dual-circuit design essentially allowed the user to "preset” settings - which was pretty much revolutionary in the 60’s.

The Jaguar has an incredible reputation as an "artist’s guitar.” In the 1980’s, the Jaguar became a popular instrument in the bubbling music scene known as Shoegaze. Guitarists such as Kevin Shield from My Bloody Valentine made use of all the switching options, the tremolo system and "behind the bridge” playing techniques – often utilizing fuzz, echo and modulation effects to create a wall of sound. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was especially fond of his 1965 Jaguar – using it in thousands of live performances and on many famous recordings.

There have been many versions of the Fender Jaguar over the years and it’s nearly impossible to divulge the entire history of the instrument here. The bottom line is, whether you’re looking for a piece of history or just a great Fender guitar – the Fender Jaguar is certainly worth checking out.
