After three years working for Fender in the early 70’s, Wayne Charvel left and started "Charvel’s Guitar Repair" to repair and refinish older Fender instruments. The shop earned a reputation among local musicians for its custom finishes, and handmade upgrade parts. After a number of foreign manufactures began to copy and sell Charvel style parts, Charvel made the decision to start producing complete guitars.
Due to personal reasons, in 1978 Wayne Charvel sold the company to Grover Jackson who quickly retooled the company to produce its now famous "Super Strat" style guitars which were beginning to take off in the heavy metal world and would later become very popular in the 80’s when famous rock guitarist icons such as Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen), Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), Jake E. Lee (Ozzy Osbourne), and Vinnie Vincent (KISS) all began using Charvel Instruments. Since then models like the San Dimas, the So-Cal, and the Desolation have continued the reputation of Charvel for building high-performance guitars for guitarists everywhere.
