Distortion, Overdrive & Boost Pedals (Dunlop)

Guitar & Bass Effects  >  Distortion, Overdrive & Boost Pedals

Distortion is an essential aspect of most forms of modern and classic rock, as well as many other genres. There are three basic categories of distortion; overdrive, fuzz and distortion. Overdrive typically simulates the sound of a cranked tube amp, making it the most "organic" type of distortion. Examples include the Boss Super Overdrive, Visual Sound's Route 808 and the Digitech Bad Monkey. Pedals such as the Elecro-Harmonix Big Muff are considered "fuzz pedals." These are similar to overdrive but achieve a more intense sound. In the 1960's, many guitarists would poke holes in their speakers to achieve a "fuzz tone." (Please don't do that!)

The last type is more of a hi-gain distortion. This is most commonly used in heavy metal & hard rock. It's the thickest or most "saturated" type of distortion available. Examples include the Boss Metal Zone, Digitech Death Metal & Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff.
